  About 32 Agam (JAIN AGAM AND AGAM INTRODUCTION)

First of all us to understand the word "Jain". The word "Jain" has originated from the word "Ji". "Ji" means "to win". Those who have completely won over attachment, passion and malice are called Jain. According to the command of the Almighty. Jain are those who try to win over attachment, passion and malice in oneself. The sermon of Almighty good is knitted in the form of "Sutras" by gandharvas and is called "Jainagam".

Jain Agam literature is the origin of other Jain literature. The code of conduct depicted in Jain Agam is the path towards world peace. The untiring efforts of Jainacharyas have bought to us the sacred Agam tradition and we have to maximize its spread. It is the sacred responsibility of each and every person who has faith in Jain Shashan that the society understands and accepts this tradition.

Every Jain Tirthankar has attained the purity of soul by penance and restraint, make life and birth meaningful. When four karmas (1) Gyanavarniya Karm (2) Darssharavarniya Karm (3) Mohniya karm and (4) Antrai karm are completely won over, the sould of tirthankara attains Keval gyan and Kevaldarshan. Thus, they themselves become Agam. The word Agam originates from "Aa" Upsarga and "gam" dhatu. Tirthankar cannot say each emotion that he sees through Kevalagyan. Therefore, Agam is the limited collection of emotions of Kevli, whichj are formed into sutras, siddhants of shastras by gandharvas.

Each Agam is the essence of the devotion of tirthankar. It is the life line of the entire Jain sashan in the absence of Tirthankar. It is the support of chaturvidh Shree Sangh. It is the religious book of the entire Jain community. There are 32 Agams in the Sthanakvasi Sect. A short introduction of different subjects of Agams is as follows :

(1) SHREE ACHARANGA SUTRA : In this Agam, the pure life spirit and the non-ending (endless) power of the spirit and soul are depicted. In a similar mamer, the power of five stavasa (1) Earth (2) Water (3) Fire (4) Air and (5) Vegetation is depicted. The life of Mahavir Swami shows the path of achieving the eternal destiration by true understanding, faith and behaviour.

(2) SHREE SUIGADANG SUTRA (Shree Sutrakrutand Sutra) : In this Agam, the thoughts of other sects of religion have been criticised and the theory of holyness of Jain Darshan have been prefessed. Other important instructions like the importance of staying in Gurukul for a devotee, to leave behind wordly goods, to practice restrain have been depicted in this Agam.

(3) SHREE THANANG SUTRA (Shree Sthananaga Sutra): In this Agam, all the items from one to ten are depicted in detail. "Seven Naya," The speciality of Jain Darshan helpful in arriving at a compromise between internally oppotite thoughts. For example, all the creatures of this universe are same in the matter of internal power and Therefore Materialistically, The spirit is one but the position of different creatures is different and therefore, the spirit in innumerable.

(4) SHREE SAMVAYANG SUTRA : In this Agam, the objects are depicted in numbers – One, Two, Three, Hundred, Thousand, Lakh, Crore,. The information of the position of living and non giving objects of the world is given here.

(5) SHREE BHAGVATI SUTRA : This is an auspicious Agam. In this Agam, the conversation between Mahavir Swami and first Gandharva Gautam Swami has been depicted. In this Agam, There are 36000 questions asked by Gautam Swami and others and answered by Mahavir Swami. All the material objects, knowledge of atoms and planes have been mentioned here.

(6) SHREE KNATA DHARMA KATHANG SUTRA : Deep knowledge of Jain Darshan has been explained in this Agam using live stories and occasions. Even the common reader can understand the gist of dharma by reading these interesting stones.

(7) SHREE UPASAK DASHANG SUTRA : Among the innumerable shravakas that were these in the era of Mahavir Swami, there were 10 whose life is an ideal for shravakas. The detail narration of these to Sharavakar is given in this Agam. Even without taking diksha, how can one do maximum dharma and make the best use of this life as human being. The path to attaining this is depicted here.

(8) SHREE ANTGADH SUTRA : In this Agam, the life of 90 people, who have attained moksha in the same life in described. By reading this Agam, one would have no desire for worldly things, and would more towards attaining moksha.

(9) SHREE ANUTAROVAVAL SUTRA : In this Agam, the life of those human beings have been depicted who have attained Devlok through restrain and penance. One undergoes restrain and penance to nullity Karma. Even by doing so, one attains punya and gets to Devlok., from there, he will definitely go to Moksha.

(10) SHREE PRASHNA VYAKARAN SUTRA : Five reasons to for Kamabandhan are depicted here (1) NITHYATVA – Lack of true belief (2) AVRAT – Lock of restrain (3) PRAMAD – Diligence in the wrong way (4) KASHAY – To practice arges, pride, fraud and greed (5) ASHUBH YOG – To misuse the power of the union of mind, body and soul.

Five ways to avoid Karmbandhan are also given (1) SAMYAKTVA – True understanding and belief (2) Life of penance and restrain (3) APRAMAD : Diligence in the right path. (4) KASHAY TYAG : Not to practice anger, pride, fraud and greed. (5) SHUBH YOG : To use the power of mind, body and soul in the right direction.

(11) SHREE VIPAK SUTRA : Using life stories, the result of good and evil deeds is depicted. After reading this, one strives to avoid evil deeds and thus avoid karmabandhan. By reading this, Agam, human beings strive to move towards. The good from the evil. The way to move towards purity has been shown here.

(12) SHREE AUPPATIK SUTRA : The through and behaviors of some of beings who have attained Devgati has been depicted here. The life of Ambad Sanyasi and his 500 deciples has been shown. The beautiful description of how they undertook 12 vratas of shravakas in sanyasi’s clothes after meeting Mahavir Swami and their ultimate devotion is shown here.

(13) SHREE RAIPRASHNIYA SUTRA : The detail life of Pardesi Raja has been given here. The life full of sin and fraud in the beginning,, Then the meeting of Jain disciple Shree Keshi Swami due to the efforts of minister unit. The interesting dialogues that took place between Pardesi Raja and Keshi Swami in the garden to bring about the true spirit. At the end, Pardesi Raja got faith and attached 12 Vratas His queen, Suryakanta Rani could not take in his life and gave him poison. Pardesi Raja went to paushadshala and undertook Anshan vrat and died in peace. He took rebirth in devlok as Mahariddhi Dev.

(14) SHREE JIVABHI GAM SUTRA : In this agam the information of Jiva Darshan and Ajivdarshan is given. The three part of book (1) Urdhava Lok (2) Madhya Lok (3) Addho Lok is described here with detailed position and condition.

(15) SHREE PRAGNAPNA SUTRA : Every doctrine and principle of Jain Darshan is described here. The partition of worldly beings according to their differences, their minimum and maximum position in each situation parts and particles of Karma, places of Origin of beings, different bodies attained by them and their results, kashay, Indriya, Leshya, Samudhghat, etc are described here.

(16) SHREE JAMBUDWIP PRAGNAPTI SUTRA : There are innumberable islands and oceans in Madhyalok according to Jain Darshan. Mambudwep is in the middle of their. It comprising of 5 Bharat Kshetra, 5 Airavat Kshetra and 5 Mahavideh Kshetra – 15 Karmabhumi Kshetra The changing of 6 "Aara", beginning of Dharma, the birth of 24 Tirthankara, Yuglik Kshetra is Akarmabhoomi, Mountains, rivers, etc. These are described in detail. (17) & (18) SHREE CHANDRA PRAGNAPTI & SHREE SURYA PRAGNAPTI : In this Agam, Jain Astrology and related topics are described. Sun, Moon, Planets, Starts, their movement and speed and their effect in the formation of day and night in depicted here.

(19) to (23) SHREE UPANG SUTRA : 5 Upang Sutra comprising of Niryavalika, etc are described. Here those beings who have gone to Narak and Devlok are described.

(24) SHREE UTRADHYAYAN SUTRA : The last sermon of Bhagvan Mahavir Swami has found place in Jain religion in this form. The sermon is for the welfare of Shravakas and sadhus.

(25) SHREE DASVAIKALIK SUTRA : This Agam propagates the way to use of sadhus, shows the path of Dharmas, the system of attaining food by sadhus. The behavior pattern of sadhus, rules of conduct, use of language, 4 types of Samadhi and the forms of saintly.

(26) SHREE NANDI SUTRA : The tradition of followers, various names given to chaturvidh Shree Sangh, its forms, and the detailed description of 5 knowledge, and its path is given here.

(27) SHREE ANUYOGWAR SUTRA : This is the entry point for the reading all other Agams. Here the meanings of words and their definitions are described.

(28) to (31) SHREE NISHIT ETC – 4 CHED SUTRA : The limitations of the life of a sadhu, their behavior and the repentance if sadhus misbehaves is given here.

(32) SHREE AVASHYAK : Repentance of sins by sadhu, sadhus, shrawakas and shrarikas given here

Of the 32 Agams, some are math oriented and same are story-oriented. Depending on one’s qualifications and merit, one can chose the type of agam and attain completeness by its study. In this way, Agams are like lighthouse for the disciple.

The Agams are the base of the whole jain sect. These Agams are the the detailed description of the code of conduct for the jain followers as well as the jain saints> The Agams are the real pathway which leads the "Jainas" toward the upliftment of soul and towards world peace.

According to the tradition of the Sthanakwasi these Agams are 32 sutras which are divided as follow :
